My Sister’s First Creampie, by Jezebel Rose
My sister is getting married soon.
My family has been waiting a long time for this moment- more excited for hers than for my hypothetical one in the future. But for a big, glaring reason, when the news got out, my sister’s wedding announcement was met with polite half-smiles and “ahs.”
I watched my sister gulp nervously in the family reunion. Her long, curvy, red hair bounced every time she walked from place to place or laughed. I watched her from across the table, glass of wine in hand. It has only been what, two hours since the family reunion started? Her leg in her long white dress bounced against the ground under the table; she was aching to leave this garden party.
“So uh, how long have you known, who did you say that was? Daniel?” an older aunt asked. For some reason whenever she could not hear well, she adjusted her glasses.
“Oh, close- Danielle. She’s a… well. A she. And we have known each other since I moved out of state.” My sister Gabby traced the rim of her glass. Aunt Stella’s eyebrows raised.
“A girl? You’re marrying a woman?” Again, her glasses.
“Yeah. That’s apparently legal here and well, you know, other states. So.”
Aunt Stella scoffed. Other people were starting to watch. When Gabby told people- or at least, when they heard about it from the grapevine and they pulled Gabby over to confirm- a fraction was supportive. The older (the more abundant) ears were discreet with their disapproval.
So, when they heard Aunt Stella loudly scoff and wave her hand, as if swatting away the bad news, everyone looked. It was either please don’t be mean or she’s going to say something I kept to myself.
“And your parents approved of that? What did your church say? Honey, are you sure? When did you decide to be… like that?” The questions came in one breathless sentence. Gabby looked around, feeling on the eyes on her. Ironically, these were the people she told me she wanted to the wedding. I am guessing she’s changing her mind soon.
“Mom and Dad were alright.” She turned to me “Jacob was fine with it too.” She clicked her lips. “I have left the Victory Church, but Dani and I considered marrying in the one in her hometown.”
I watched her brown eyes water as she looked down. She deliberately did not answer the other questions. Aunt Stella’s hands went up in surrender. “Well honey I have always loved you ever since you were little, but no offense, I am not attending any queer wedding of yours! And that is that!”
Gabby nodded and forced a smile. What I thought would be the end of an awkward conversation was the start of another.
Gabby practically leaped out of her chair, hiked up her dress, and walked through the grass. She was entering the restaurant building, and no doubt she wanted completely out of here.
Everyone’s eyes followed her. Aunt Stella shrugged as she took a sip of wine.
Without thinking, I got up and left my table of cousins. With long strides I walked to where Gabby was. I felt the grass under my shoes until I heard the thump of tiled floors. I looked around and found my sister’s head in her hands, sobbing on a bench. Few of the staff looked but paid no attention.
I sat down next to her.
“Hey,” I rubbed her back. Her sob was quiet. In fact, maybe she was not even crying, just exhausted.
She sat up and saw her dry eyes. Her arms crossed, “I’m not going back in there, Jake. I’m just not. I don’t care.”
“Then don’t. Come on, let’s get in my car. I need to go feed my fish anyway.”
.
“I was not even inviting her, you know? The way she talked like I asked her to pay for everything in my fucking wedding! The nerve to talk to me like that!”
Gabby’s hands were everywhere. It was hard to keep my eyes on the road when she made all sorts of gestures.
“Yeah, yeah,” I told her between sentences.
“And to ask me, me, if I am sure? If I’m sure? Ha! Haha!” she began forcing laughter.
