Raped and Impregnated in the Pumpkin Patch, by Jezebel Rose
~
There was an urban legend that every college student knew at Capital College. The pumpkin field on the city’s outskirts was haunted by the spirit of the farmer who lived there all his life and maintained it. It was mostly abandoned now, with some estranged neighbors taking care of it now and then.
During the summer break, Jamal, Tina, and Lilly devised a plan to see for themselves if the story was real. They packed some snacks and a flashlight for each one to investigate properly since the legend said that the spirit only came out at night. They went in Jamal’s car for no other reason than he loved to drive.
“So, do you think that we’ll find something tonight?” asked Tina.
“Yeah, maybe. I don’t believe in shit like that, to be honest, but I’ll be happy to be proven wrong,” said Jamal.
“What about you, Lilly?”
“Mhm, let’s see what happens.”
Tina checked the flashlights to see if they worked, and not one of them turned on. She inspected them thoroughly and discovered that none of them had batteries.
“Jamal,” said Tina. “I think you forgot something.”
“Ah, fuck. What?”
“Batteries.”
“Oh, yeah! I left them on the table, and I forgot to pick them up before I left my place.”
“Good job, genius,” she said, chuckling.
Jamal stopped the car at a gas station. The three friends got down from the vehicle and entered the store to buy some batteries.
“Welcome,” said the clerk, “how can I help you?”
“We need some batteries.”
“Yeah, they’re over there. Take your pick, my friend.”
Tine and Lilly got a soda and a juice, respectively, and gave them to Jamal to pay for them along with the batteries.
“Are you going exploring?”
“We want to check out the pumpkin field; they say it’s haunted, and we want to take a look for ourselves, you know?”
“Yes, yes. The field. My grandma was friends with old Jacob, the former owner of the land. She always thought that the legend was kind of ridiculous but that old Jacob was always grumpy, so maybe it’s real.”
“Spooky,” said Tina, chuckling and elongating the Os to sound like a ghost.
“Be careful out there, yeah?” said the cashier.
“Thanks, man; we will,” said Jamal.
They left the gas station and got in the car.
“Cute guy,” said Tina.
“You should go back and suck his dick,” said Jamal.
Tina slapped him playfully on the shoulder as he turned the car on.
“Why don’t you go, Jamal?”
“I’m not the one who finds every guy cute.”
“I mean,” said Lilly, “there’s nothing wrong with wanting to suck dick.”
“True,” conceded Jamal, and he gently stepped on the pedal.
It only took a few more minutes on the road for them to get to the land. There was a dirt road with trees at its sides and a rusty gate. Lilly got down, opened the gate, and got back in the car. The sun was going down, and Jamal turned the lights on, but only for a brief moment since they could see the pumpkin field not too far away. There was a house next to the field.
They walked to it and strolled around, looking at the pumpkins. They were big and had a nice color; someone had been taking care of them – probably the neighbors. It was almost pitch black, but they didn’t use the flashlights yet. They sat in the middle of a pumpkin patch, and Jamal took the snacks out. Tina and Lilly got opened their beverages up, and they had the creepiest picnic of their lives. The wind got colder as the night progressed, and they just talked and had a good time there, in the middle of nowhere.
“Now, what do you all say if we investigate that house?” said Jamal.
“It looks abandoned,” said Lilly.
“Even better,” said Tina. “Some harmless adventure without worrying about a farmer putting holes in our chests with a shotgun.”
The friends stood up and went to the house. Jamal took the helm and guided the small expedition towards the house. They took their lanterns out because the inside of the building was covered in darkness. They could barely see outside, but inside would be impossible.
The house had a vintage vibe to it. They didn’t know who it belonged to, but it was clear that they weren’t living there. Everything was likely in the same place as when old Jacob lived and worked the field.
“That Jacob guy probably made some bank whenever it was Halloween,” said Tina.
“Yeah,” said Jamal. “They’re pretty; I’d buy one myself since Halloween is almost here anyway.”
“You can just take one. Unless you want to leave some money on the dining table, there’s nobody here that you can pay.”
“Huh, you’re right.”
“I don’t think you should take one,” said Lilly. “Inhabited or not, the things in this place don’t belong to you.”
Jamal blew her off and continued walking into the house. Sadly, their adventure had proved uninteresting. It was an old house that smelled of dust and old age.
“There’s nothing here,” said Jamal. “Let’s go outside and call it a night.”
The young man blew a cobweb away, and they all went outside. He went straight for the biggest pumpkin that he saw on the field. It was bright orange, and it looked expensive due to the sheer size.
“Jamal…” said Lilly, but she didn’t complete the phrase.
“It’s fine,” said Tina. “A crime without a victim ain’t a crime.”
“I’m with Tina on this one,” said Jamal.
He picked his prize up and turned around to get it to the trunk of his car. A sudden gust of wind sent a chill down their spine. A growl came from behind the college students. They all turned around towards the field but saw and heard nothing.
“What the fuck was that,” said Jamal.
“Old Jacob’s spirit coming to kill you for stealing from him!” said Tina before bursting into laughter.
A second strange sound coming from the field erased that smile off her face. They were getting scared.
“Are there any wild animals around here?” asked Lilly.
“I don’t think so,” said Jamal.
“Let’s get out of here, guys,” said Tina, worried.
They walked faster towards the car, but there was a figure standing next to it. Tina tried to shine a light on it, but her flashlight wouldn’t turn on. Lilly tried it, and hers was out of commission as well.
“Put that back. Now.”
The figure was a man with a deep voice. He walked towards the friends, and they sighed with relief.
“Sorry, man. I thought this was abandoned, you know?” said Jamal. “Can I buy this one from you?”
“They’re not for sale.”
“Aw, come on. How about-”
“I said they’re not for sale.”
The man’s voice had grown louder.
“His feet!” said Tina.
The man was floating in the air, a few inches from the ground. Jamal and Tina got pale as a sheet and sprinted off by foot on the dirt road towards the entrance.
Lilly didn’t move, but she didn’t look scared.
“I’m sorry, sir. I tried to tell them that it wasn’t okay to take something that didn’t belong to them.”
“I know; I heard you. Thank you very much.”
“Are you… the owner of this land?”
“Yes. I’m Jacob.”
Lilly felt another shiver down her spine, but he didn’t look malicious.
“You’re the one tending to the pumpkins, aren’t you?”
“Yeah.”
