The trees rustled lightly around them, luckily the breeze was light and the summer weather was just warm enough to make the hike up the mountain pleasant. The sun was just starting to sink below the horizon as the two of them neared their campsite. Katherine led the way with Joanne just a few steps behind.
“Next time we camp lower on the mountain,” Joanne huffed, trying to keep up with Katherine. The two of them had gone hiking plenty of times before, but never this high up.
Katherine glanced back at her, “Sure, I just thought it would be nice to set up somewhere different, get a different view. I didn’t think this site would be so much higher though. You going to be alright?”
Joanne waved over her friend’s concern. They had made it a habit of going hiking whenever they could, it had been something both of them were interested in when they first met as freshmen, even now a year out of school they still made an effort to go together. Joanne knew that Katherine choosing this weekend wasn’t a coincidence though.
Joanne had broken up with her boyfriend earlier in the week, and Katherine had been quick to swoop in and suggest they drive out here. She was grateful for the change of scenery and the chance to get her mind off things. They refrained from talking for most of the hike to focus on just the climb, which Joanne was grateful for. Katherine was the more experienced of the two of them and she made the climb look easy, but she made an effort to set a pace that Joanne could keep up with.
