I was out with some friends in Europe – we were camping and doing some rock climbing near some popular cliffs. After the third day, we were getting ready to head home, exhausted. We gathered our things together and climbed into a variety of tents.

My muscles were sore from climbing all day, but I managed to fall asleep quite quickly. It wasn’t until I heard a sound in the night that woke me. Hearing the sound again, I shook my friend, “Hey, do you hear that?” I said, “it sounds like a strange animal.”

She was passed out, “Ugh, yeah, it’s fine. Go back to sleep.”

I was curious and a bit scared, to be honest. It was an odd enough sound that I just had to check it out. Like the call of an owl, you look around for the rare creature. I heard the noise again, echoing off the walls of the large canyon we were within.

Again it called out, almost soothingly. It was quite strange as I stumbled through the night with my flashlight, trying to figure out what it could be. Part of me wanted to go back and bring one of the girls with me, but the rest just wanted to see what it was. I had my phone on me – worst case, I could call them. But nothing around here, at least native to the area, was dangerous. It was one of the reasons this area was popular for climbing, camping, and sometimes partying.
