Chapter 1: Inheritance and Distant Relations
Rain tapped softly against the windowpane. A gentle rhythm mirrored the cozy kitchen’s subdued atmosphere. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee hung in the air, intertwining with the muted morning light that filtered through the curtains.
Seated across from each other at the breakfast table, Alex and Karen shared the space in silence, the gap between them palpable even in their close proximity. Alex, with a mop of unruly dark hair and an air of youthful curiosity, stared absentmindedly at his plate of scrambled eggs. Karen, a woman in her early forties with gentle lines etched by time, focused on her own plate, her thoughts drifting far beyond the porcelain and silverware.
“Mom, I’ve been thinking,” Alex finally broke the stillness, his voice carrying a hint of hesitation.
Karen glanced up, offering a brief smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “What’s on your mind, Alex?”
He cleared his throat, gathering his thoughts. “Well, I’ve been reading about this guy, William,” he began, his words cautious but laced with enthusiasm. “He was our great-grandfather. Seems he had this incredible life, traveling to all these amazing places, meeting all sorts of people. He wrote about it all in these letters and journals.”
Karen raised an eyebrow, intrigued despite herself. “William? I don’t recall hearing much about him.”
Alex shrugged. “I guess he wasn’t talked about much. But these letters, Mom, they’re like windows into his world. He was a true adventurer.”
Curiosity sparked in Karen’s eyes, momentarily pushing aside the weight of the distant connection between them. “And where did you come across all this?”
Alex’s lips curled into a half-smile. “Funny enough, it’s all thanks to an unexpected inheritance.”
